I initially felt that the most powerful and efficient way to promote your blog was through Facebook, apart from SEO. Please don’t get me wrong. I must say Facebook is still a fantastic platform for interacting with thousands of people, sharing and promoting your content, and building a community around your blog (or website).
But when it comes to driving traffic to your blog, Pinterest seems to be a much better option than any other social network out there.
And, you know what?
I discovered something incredible when I started reading blog income and traffic data from some of the best bloggers out there. Pinterest was the number 1 source of traffic for many of them. It’s true not just for the established bloggers, but also for those who are just getting started with blogging.
So I decided to take advantage of this opportunity and learn everything I can about the best Pinterest strategies for bloggers.
I’ve learned a lot and continue to do so.

Pinterest, just like Google, uses ever-changing algorithms called Smart Feed to present pins that are relevant to the user’s needs.
Pinterest algorithms are mostly driven by keywords. It mainly uses the keywords used in pin descriptions, and profile to identify the topic under consideration.
So, if you’re a food blogger who’s expressed an interest in cooking meals, the Pinterest algorithm will attempt to fill your home feed with related Pin images.
And, it will display pins from people all over the world, not just those you follow.
The images you upload on the platform will remain available essentially forever. But, for other sites like Facebook, once your post has rolled the first page on a social media site, it is usually lost in the archives. On Pinterest, however, it’s different; your pin can continue to generate traffic for years, especially if you follow the strategies below.

The methods I’m going to discuss are applicable not only to new users of Pinterest but also to existing users. Yes, existing users can also improve their pinning skills and start receiving more traffic with these tactics.
So, without further ado, let’s get started.
1. Focus on Pinterest SEO
Pinterest, as you may already know, is both a social networking site and a search engine. And, just like any other search engine, you’ll have to utilize keywords to get your content to appear on the user’s home feed or in search results.
With 478 million monthly active users, millions of individuals use Pinterest every day to share and pin, resulting in millions of pins getting shared.
What you must realize is that your images must stand out among all the ocean of pins. To have the best chance of achieving this goal, relevant keywords should be strategically placed over the board, as well as in your pin description.
Wondering how to get it done?
Let’s see how to apply SEO on Pinterest.
Step 1: Research Keywords
This is the first and most important step. You’ll need to discover the most popular Pinterest keywords in your niche. There’s an easy way to do it.
Simply, go to Pinterest’s search bar, type in a few keywords related to your niche, and then use the Pinterest search box’s suggestions.

Step 2: Optimize Your Profile with Keywords
Here’s where you should include keywords in your profile.
- Profile name
- Profile description
- Profile image (Consider using the same image across all of your social media platforms and tag it with some relevant keywords.
To be frank, there’s nothing more you can do with your Pinterest profile.
Step 3: Create Relevant Pinterest Boards
Create boards that are relevant to the searches that your target audience is performing.
Just as you organize your blog posts into different categories to make it easier for your visitors to find them, the same concept applies to Pinterest boards.
Simply, create boards that are focused on your niche. By this, I mean creating boards that are relevant to what your target audience might be looking for.

You can make up to 500 boards on Pinterest. I recommend making as many niche-related boards as possible. It’ll help your content receive more impressions and, as a result, you can get more followers to your Pinterest account.
Step 4: Add Keywords in Board Description
I’d keep it short and sweet and get right to the point.
When it comes to writing descriptions for your boards, the smartest thing you can do is load them with a lot of related keywords (of course, with limits) separated by commas.
But of course, don’t overdo it. 10-15 keywords are quite enough.
Simply, after a brief explanation of what your followers will find on the board, you can fill it with some relevant keywords.
This, in my opinion, is the most effective method to optimize your Pinterest boards.
Remember that Pinterest is a search engine. So make all of your boards SEO-friendly so that they rank well and also appear in search results.
Step 5: Add Keywords in Your Pin Description
Pin description is the best and most effective place to implement SEO. You should consider your pins to be the portal to your site. So, you want to make sure your pin shows up in searches, on people’s Smart feeds, and as Picked for you, right?
So, how can this be achieved?
Best Answer: Through keyword-rich pin description.
Here’s what you should do:
- Briefly describe what users will find in the pin you’ve shared.
- Include keywords in your pin description, separated by commas.
- After you write your description, always include a Call to action (What your readers should do after discovering your pin).
2. Create Attention-Grabbing Pins
Pinterest is a great way to get the word out about your blog posts. But, you aren’t the only one who uses Pinterest to promote blog posts. Millions of other Pinterest users are doing the same thing. That’s why you should try your best to create and design pins that shine out amongst the noise and encourage people to click on them and visit your site.
To design click-worthy pins, I recommend using Canva. It’s a free online graphic design platform that lets you easily create pins for a variety of platforms, such as Pinterest, Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, and blog posts.
Here’s how you can create click-worthy pins:
- You should create long vertical pins (750 x 1500). On Pinterest, these images appear substantially larger and are shared far more frequently than horizontal pins.
- Light, warm, and vibrant colours should be used. Images that are dark or cool are either ignored or suppressed in the background.
- Make sure to use a few keywords in the pin.
- Create captivating and exciting headlines that convince people to click on your pin.
- Make use of a wide range of font styles and sizes.
- You don’t want to clutter your pin, so keep the background blank or simple.
- Include a link to your website or a logo in the pin.
KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid) is something I’ve learned from my marketing and sales experience. This basic guideline works wonders on Pinterest. Don’t go crazy when designing a pin. Including too much information on the pin may turn off the readers.
3. Join Pinterest Group Boards
I can’t stress enough how critical Pinterest group boards are for increasing your blog traffic. Really, these boards can send you to drive an incredible amount of traffic.
As the name suggests, group boards have hundreds, if not thousands, of followers. So, sharing your pin on one will earn you a lot of attention. Not only will your pin be viewed by your followers, but if someone likes or re-pins it, it will gain even more exposure.
As a result, they’ll help you in increasing your reach, re-pins, and followers, all of which will result in more traffic. So, you should join as many relevant group boards as possible, and then build a good strategy to benefit from them.
Do the following once you’ve joined a group board:
- You should share your pins regularly on these group boards.
- Re-pin other people’s pins that are more popular than yours to improve your group board ranking.
- Pin at random intervals to avoid looking spammy.
4. Pin Regularly
How many times you pin is also an important factor in your Pinterest success. So make it a habit to pin on a regular basis.
Pinterest is always watching and listening. Yes, this is true, but not in a weird way.
Pinterest can monitor your activity on the site and reward you based on how active you are. If you’re active on Pinterest, you’ll be rewarded by others sharing your pins and boards.
So how often should you pin?
The more the better, right? Every day, you should strive to pain at least 20-30 pins. Previously, people used to pin 100+ pins per day. And it worked, but not anymore. Now it’ll look spammy if you do the same thing now. However, remember to pin at regular intervals so that the Pinterest algorithms don’t flag you as spam.
