1. Medium

Medium Homepage

Medium is a fantastic platform for writers who want to write freely. It provides writers with the freedom to share their knowledge and ideas on any topic.

Instead of being called blog posts, the contents are known as stories on Medium. It is a great place to connect with like-minded individuals and boasts a large audience base, making it the perfect free blogging site for beginners to share their thoughts.

Medium is often compared to microblogging social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. However, on Medium, readers show their appreciation for your content by giving claps rather than the traditional like button.

Additionally, users can follow other members with similar interests.

The user interface is clean and easy to navigate, with a strong focus on the quality of content rather than flashy design elements. Anyone can sign up for free and start publishing their own articles, essays, and stories. Readers on Medium can discover new content by browsing the curated collections or by searching for topics of interest.

Medium has a “Claps” system to allow readers to show their appreciation for an article by clicking the clap button. The more claps an article receives, the more likely it is to be featured on Medium’s homepage and distributed to a wider audience.

Medium runs a subscription service called “Medium Membership” which offers users access to exclusive content, early access to new features, and other benefits.

As a writer, you can also get paid for writing on Medium.

You’ll need to join their Partner Program which pays writers based on how much engagement their articles receive from Medium subscribers. The more engagement an article receives, the more money the writer earns. Overall, it’s a great alternative to traditional blogging platforms that usually don’t directly pay writers for their work.

So, if you don’t like to set up your own WordPress blog, Medium is a great option. Its minimalist design and community-driven approach make it a great option for new bloggers looking for a free blogging site to share their knowledge online.

Unlike other social media sites with character limits, Medium stories can have an unlimited number of words. So, you can write a single story with over 7000 words or more, which can help you offer a more in-depth perspective on a topic. Now, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of using Medium to create free blogs.

Advantages of Blogging on Medium

  • Large audience: Medium has a large and growing user base, which can help you reach a wider audience than you might on a self-hosted blog.
  • Built-in community: Medium is a social platform that encourages users to interact with and share each other’s content. This can help you build a following on the platform and engage with other writers and readers.
  • Easy to use: Medium is designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, which can make it easy to start publishing your content without a lot of technical knowledge.
  • No technical maintenance: Since Medium is a hosted platform, you don’t need to worry about maintaining your own website or dealing with technical issues.
  • Automatic distribution: When you publish on Medium, your content is automatically distributed to users who follow relevant topics or publications.
  • Medium Partner Program: Medium allows you to participate in their Partner Program, which can earn you money based on engagement with your content.

Disadvantages of Blogging on Medium

  • Limited control: While Medium offers customization options, you are limited in how much control you have over the design and functionality of your blog. You cannot install plugins or make extensive changes to the underlying code.
  • Limited monetization: Medium does not allow you to place ads on your blog, which means you cannot generate revenue directly from your content. While you can include affiliate links in your Medium stories or participate in the Medium Partner Program, this may not be a reliable source of income.
  • Content ownership: When you publish on Medium, you are granting the platform a license to use your content as they see fit. While you retain ownership of your content, Medium can use it for marketing or promotional purposes.
  • Limited branding: Your Medium blog will be hosted on the Medium domain, which means you do not have complete control over your branding.
  • Limited analytics: While Medium provides some basic analytics for your Medium stories, it is not as robust as other blogging platforms. You may have difficulty tracking important metrics like user engagement and conversions.
  • Limited SEO opportunities: While Medium does offer some SEO options, you do not have as much control over optimizing your content for search engines.

2. Tumblr

Tumblr Landing Page

Tumblr is another social media-based microblogging platform. It’s a great choice for those who want to blog as a hobby, especially among younger users who find it enjoyable. One of the perks of Tumblr is that it already has a built-in audience, which means your blog posts may reach a wide audience even without SEO strategies.

Like other social media platforms, Tumblr allows members to follow each other based on shared interests. But, it’s not just for publishing text-based posts.

It’s an ideal platform for sharing multimedia content, such as images, videos, and infographics, making it perfect for personal blogging rather than niche topics.

Tumblr is known for its highly customizable and visually appealing themes, as well as its emphasis on user-generated content and community. Users can follow other users’ blogs and reblog their content, creating a viral effect that can quickly spread throughout the platform. Tumblr has also been known for its diverse and often eccentric user base, as well as its support for various subcultures and marginalized communities.

Advantages of Blogging on Tumblr

  • Creative Expression: Tumblr encourages creative expression through visual media and writing. It’s a great platform for artists, writers, photographers, and other creatives to share their work and build an audience.
  • Community Building: Tumblr allows users to follow and interact with other users who share similar interests. This creates a sense of community and can lead to meaningful connections with like-minded individuals.
  • Highly Customizable: You can easily customize your blog themes, fonts, and layouts to reflect your personal style and branding. This can help to create a unique and memorable online presence. However, the free Tumblr themes are not good enough. You’ll need to pay for premium themes to make your blog stand out.
  • The potential of Your Content Being Viral: Tumblr is known for its reblogging feature, which allows users to easily share content with their followers. This can lead to viral posts and increased exposure for content creators on Tumblr.
  • Privacy: Tumblr offers privacy settings that allow users to control who can see and interact with their content. This can be especially important for individuals who want to share their work online but still maintain some level of privacy.

Disadvantages of Blogging on Tumblr

  • Difficult to Monetize: Tumblr doesn’t have a built-in monetization model, which can make it difficult for content creators to make money from their work. While some users have been able to leverage their following to generate income through sponsorships or merchandise sales, it’s not a reliable source of income.
  • Toxic Community: As with any online platform, there is potential for a toxic or hostile community on Tumblr. Depending on the content you create or the communities you engage with, you may be subjected to harassment, bullying, or hate speech.
  • Changing Ownership: Tumblr has changed ownership several times in recent years, which has led to uncertainty about the platform’s future and direction. This can make it difficult to build a long-term presence on the platform.
  • Limited Analytics: Tumblr’s analytics tools are somewhat limited, which can make it difficult to track the performance of your content or understand your audience. This can make it difficult to optimize your strategy or grow your following.

3. WordPress.com

WordPress.com Landing page

WordPress.com remains the top choice for bloggers when it comes to selecting the best free platform for their content. It’s completely free to start a blog.

You can sign up for free and start crafting your blog posts immediately.

The popularity of WordPress is undeniable, with its free downloadable CMS being used by approximately 40% of all websites on the Internet, making it one of the most widely used content management systems in the world.

WordPress.com provides an excellent opportunity for beginners to venture into the world of blogging without any costs. Moreover, numerous self-hosted blogs and websites prefer to use WordPress CMS because of its comprehensive features and functionalities.

Well, don’t confuse WordPress.com with WordPress.org, like most beginners. Here’s a table comparing WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

WordPress.com vs WordPress.org

WordPress.com vs WordPress.org

Overall, WordPress.com offers a convenient and user-friendly platform for new bloggers, while WordPress.org provides more control over the website’s design and functionality. Serious bloggers who prioritize full customization, full control, and monetization options should consider using WordPress.org, while those who prioritize a free platform, ease of use, and free support may prefer WordPress.com.

However, like other free blogging sites, WordPress has its pros and cons.

Advantages of WordPress.com

  • User-Friendly Interface: WordPress.com offers a user-friendly interface, making it easy for beginners to create and manage their blogs.
  • Free Hosting: The platform provides free hosting for basic blogs, which means you don’t have to worry about setting up your own hosting service.
  • Customization Options: You get access to a range of customizable templates and themes that allow bloggers to create a unique look and feel for their site.
  • Built-In SEO: WordPress.com has built-in SEO tools that help bloggers optimize their content for search engines and attract more visitors.
  • Social Sharing: The platform makes it easy for bloggers to share their content on social media platforms, increasing their reach and engagement.

Disadvantages of WordPress.com

  • Limited Control: While WordPress.com provides a user-friendly interface, it also comes with certain limitations, particularly when it comes to design and functionality. You have limited control over your site’s appearance, features, and customizability compared to self-hosted WordPress websites. Additionally, you cannot access the site’s backend files or modify the website’s underlying code unless you pay.
  • Limited Monetization Options: With a free WordPress.com plan, you cannot monetize your blog with ads or other methods, which can be a significant disadvantage for bloggers who intend to generate income from their blogs. While there are paid plans that offer monetization features, these can be expensive.
  • Additional Costs: WordPress.com’s basic plan is free, but to access additional features and functionalities, you must upgrade to a paid plan. It can include access to additional themes, plugins, storage space, and support, which can be expensive. The cheapest WordPress.com plan which gives you access to all the essential features similar to a self-hosted WordPress blog costs $25 per month or $300 per year.
  • Customization Restrictions: The free plan offers a limited number of customizable templates and themes for your blog. Also, you cannot install any theme from third-party sources. Additionally, you cannot modify the website’s underlying code, which can be a disadvantage for users who require a high degree of customization.
  • WordPress.com Branding: The free WordPress.com plan requires displaying the WordPress.com branding on the site, which can detract from the site’s professional appearance. This branding can only be removed by upgrading to a premium plan, which may not be feasible for beginners looking for a free option.
  • No FTP Access: WordPress.com does not offer FTP access, which can be a significant disadvantage for many users who need direct access to their website’s files. This limitation can also make it difficult to transfer content to another hosting platform or backup files, which is essential in many situations.

4. Blogger

blogger homepage

Blogger, Google’s very own blogging platform, has been a popular choice for bloggers for almost two decades due to its user-friendly interface. However, the pre-designed templates available on the platform have become outdated in comparison to newer, more customizable designs offered by other free blogging sites.

Back in 2008, when I first started learning about blogging, Blogger was the go-to choice for beginners before they eventually migrated to other platforms. While I still maintain a free blog on Blogger, I find it to be outdated and not suitable for my current needs. Now, I prefer only self-hosted WordPress blogs as I need complete control of my site.

Nevertheless, if you’re still interested in creating a personal blog for free, Blogger is an excellent option worth exploring. You can also opt for Google AdSense with a blogger blog, which is great for bloggers willing to generate an income from their blogs.

Creating a free blog on Blogger is easy and can be done using your Google account. One advantage of using Blogger is that, as a Google product, you can leverage the platform to publish quality blog posts and earn money through AdSense.

Advantages of Blogger

  • User-friendly: Blogger is easy to use, even for beginners. It has a simple and intuitive interface that makes it easy to create and manage blog posts.
  • Customizable templates: You’ll get access to a wide range of customizable templates to create a unique look for your blog without any coding.
  • Integration with Google services: Since Blogger.com is owned by Google, it integrates seamlessly with other Google services easily.
  • Free blog hosting: Blogger provides free blog hosting, which means you don’t need to worry about purchasing hosting space or managing servers.
  • Reliable: Since it is owned by Google, you can be sure that it is reliable and secure. As I am writing this, thousands of blogs are running on Blogger.

Will Google Shut Down Blogger?

Google is unlikely to shut down Blogger.com for several reasons.

Firstly, the platform has been in operation for over 20 years and has a vast number of users and active blogs. Shutting it down would require a significant amount of resources, including time and money, to handle the data and its impact on users.

Secondly, Google earns revenue through AdSense on Blogger websites, which suggests that it is still a profitable product for the company.

Thirdly, while many users have concerns about the platform, there is no evidence to suggest that Google plans to abandon it. Finally, Google has a history of maintaining products and services even when they are not as popular or widely used as others, indicating a commitment to the long-term viability of its offerings.

While no one can guarantee that Google will not shut down Blogger, it’s highly unlikely given the platform’s long-standing history, large user base, ongoing profitability through AdSense, and other challenges that would come with shutting it down.

Disadvantages of Blogger

  • Limited design options: Although Blogger provides a range of templates, the design options are limited compared to other blogging platforms.
  • Limited control: Because Blogger.com is a hosted platform, you have limited control over your blog’s functionality and customization options. This can be frustrating if you want to add a new feature or plugin that isn’t available on the platform.
  • Limited support: While Blogger.com has a help center and community forums, the level of support is somewhat limited compared to other blogging platforms. If you run into an issue, you may not be able to get the level of support you need.
  • Limited ownership: When you use Blogger.com, your blog is hosted on its servers. It simply means you do not have complete ownership and control over your content. While this is unlikely to be an issue for most users, it’s worth considering if you’re concerned about long-term ownership of your content.
  • Outdated templates: One major downside of using Blogger is that the pre-designed templates available on the platform have become outdated in comparison to newer, more customizable designs offered by other blogging sites.

5. Wix

Wix Homepage

Wix is a popular website builder available online. You can easily create websites and web applications without any coding knowledge. It provides an easy-to-use drag-and-drop interface that you can use to create and customize websites using a variety of pre-designed templates, images, and other useful features.

One of the most impressive features that you’ll like is the Drag & Drop functionality. It’ll help you create a stunning blog without any coding knowledge. In fact, It’s considered one of the best website builders on the market due to its remarkable features.

If you’re considering using Wix’s blog site, you should know that it offers both paid and free plans. While the free plan comes with a blog URL that includes “wix.com” it still provides ample features to run a blog without being tech-savvy. The premium plans, on the other hand, allow you to host your own custom domain.

One of Wix’s strengths is its customer support, which is available even to free users. This is a significant advantage compared to other free blog sites. The platform has already surpassed over 100 million users from 190+ countries.

Wix offers 800+ free website templates for users to choose from, making it easy to select a design that fits your industry. One of the most exciting features of this modern-day platform is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This innovative technology asks a few questions to help create your blog and is considered the future of blogging technology. It’s no surprise that out of 100 users, 88 would recommend Wix to others.

Wix is an excellent platform for restaurants and photographers looking to start a free blog. The drag-and-drop website builder feature is easy to use, and the platform offers automatic blog backups to prevent any data loss.

However, it’s worth noting that once you hit the publish button, you won’t be able to change the template of your blog – a limitation to keep in mind.

Advantages of Using Wix

  • Easy to use: Wix provides an intuitive drag-and-drop interface that makes it easy for users to design and customize their websites.
  • Pre-designed templates: You’ll get access to 800+ pre-designed templates that you can use to create a professional-looking website. The templates are customizable, allowing you to tailor them to your specific needs.
  • Mobile responsive: All the Wix templates are mobile responsive. They automatically adjust to the screen size of the device the website is being viewed on. This is important as more and more people are accessing the internet from mobiles.
  • App market: Wix has an app market to add extra features to your websites, such as social media integration, e-commerce functionality, and more.
  • SEO-friendly: Wix provides built-in SEO tools to optimize your websites for search engines like Google and rank well on search engines.
  • Affordable: Wix offers a range of pricing plans to suit different budgets, including a free plan that you can use to start a free blog, but with limited functionality.

Disadvantages of Wix

  • Limited design flexibility: While Wix offers a wide range of customizable templates, the design options can be somewhat limited compared to a website built from scratch. This can make it difficult to create a truly unique website design.
  • Locked-in platform: Since Wix is a proprietary platform, you are somewhat locked into using Wix only for your website. This means that it may be difficult or time-consuming to migrate to another platform in the future if needed.
  • Ads on the free plan: The free plan includes ads. So, if you want to start a blog that looks professional, a free Wix blog is not an option.
  • Wix branding on the free plan: With a free Wix plan, the URL of the website will include the Wix branding in the form of a subdomain. It can be less appealing to users who want to have a custom, branded domain for their blog.

Is Wix Good as a Free Blogging Site?

Wix can be a good choice as a free blogging site for bloggers who want to create a basic blogging website quickly and easily. With the help of Wix, you can easily create a professional-looking blog without needing any coding knowledge or experience.

However, it’s important to note that Wix’s free plan has some limitations.

For example, you’ll have limited storage space and bandwidth, and your website will display Wix ads. Also, you won’t be able to use a custom domain name.

Additionally, its blogging functionality doesn’t look as advanced as dedicated blogging platforms such as WordPress blogs. While Wix does offer basic blogging features such as the ability to create and publish posts, it may not have as many advanced features such as custom post types or integrations with third-party tools.

6. Weebly

Weebly Homepage

Weebly is a popular website builder available online, similar to Wix. You can easily create websites and online stores without requiring extensive technical knowledge. Weebly offers a range of customizable templates, drag-and-drop website-building tools, and various features such as e-commerce functionality, contact forms, and blogging tools.

Based on its website statistics, Weebly currently hosts over 50 million blogs worldwide, and similar to Wix, it provides drag-and-drop tools that make the process of customizing your websites easy and efficient. Weebly isn’t just limited to free blogs; it’s also an excellent choice for e-commerce websites and portfolios. Weebly has an array of blogging tools exclusively for its customers, which allows for easy SEO analysis.

The drag-and-drop editor on Weebly provides an extensive range of features including blocks, text boxes, images, headings, embedded videos, buttons, forms, and much more. If you’re searching for a free website builder with top-notch drag-and-drop functionalities, both the Weebly and Wix platforms are great options to start your blog.

Advantages of Weebly

  • Easy to use: Weebly is user-friendly and requires no technical skills. The drag-and-drop interface makes it easy to add and customize content on your website. Even beginners can quickly create a blog or website, add and edit content, upload images and videos, and adjust the layout and design of their websites.
  • Affordable pricing: There is a free plan, which is a great option for testing out the platform. Compared to other website builders out there, Weebly is relatively affordable.
  • Mobile-responsive: With more and more people using their smartphones to browse the internet these days, having a mobile-responsive website is essential. Weebly’s templates are designed to look great on any device, automatically adjusting the layout and font size to ensure a seamless user experience.

  • Integrated e-commerce: If you want to sell products or services online, the e-commerce features make it easy. You can create an online store with product pages, shopping carts, and payment processing, as well as manage your inventory and shipping options. Weebly also integrates with popular payment gateways like PayPal and Stripe.
  • App integrations: Weebly offers a range of third-party app integrations in order to add additional functionality to your website. For example, you can add social media feeds, email marketing tools, appointment scheduling, and more. Weebly also has its own app center, with a range of useful apps and add-ons.

Disadvantages of Weebly

  • Limited design flexibility: Weebly’s templates are easy to use and look great, but they can be somewhat limited in terms of design flexibility. While you can customize the colors, fonts, and layout of your website, you may not have as much control over the overall design as you would with a custom-built website.
  • Limited blogging functionality: While Weebly does offer blogging functionality, it may not be as robust as other platforms like WordPress. For example, you may not have as much control over the design and layout of your blog, and you may not be able to add as many advanced features as the custom post or page types.

7. Ghost

Ghost CMS

If you’re looking for a simple and clean blogging platform, Ghost CMS might just be the perfect fit for you. Ghost is basically a free and open-source content management system (CMS) that’s designed specifically for content publishing. Unlike other popular blogging platforms like WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal, Ghost focuses on providing a straightforward and streamlined experience for both writers and readers.

One of the standout features of Ghost is its use of Markdown instead of WYSIWYG editing. While some bloggers might prefer a more visual editor, Markdown is a lightweight markup language that’s easy to learn and use. Plus, it can help you write cleaner and more readable content without getting bogged down by formatting.

Ghost is built with Node.js, which means it’s incredibly fast and powerful. It also supports custom themes and offers out-of-the-box SEO settings and social sharing features. Plus, Ghost has a Native Rest API and built-in membership and subscription features.

You can easily get started with Ghost, you just need a hosting service. Alternatively, you can use Ghost’s fully managed platform as a service.

Once you’ve set up your Ghost website, creating blog posts is a breeze.

The Ghost editor is simple and minimalist, and you can also see a live preview of your blog posts before getting them published. Ghost also offers subscriptions by RSS, email, and Slack, so your readers can easily keep up with your latest content.

While Ghost might not have the same level of customization or versatility as other blogging platforms, its simplicity makes it a great option for beginners or anyone looking for a straightforward blogging experience. So, if you’re in the market for a free and open-source blogging platform, you can give Ghost CMS a try.

8. Yola

Yola Landing Page

Yola is a free blogging site that makes it easy to start your own blog. One of the most significant benefits of using Yola is its website builder, Sitebuilder+. The tool is incredibly intuitive and easy to use. Users can add features, styling, and content with just a few clicks, making it easy for even beginners to create stunning websites.

With the help of Yola, you can enjoy a flexible layout that is fully responsive across all devices, including desktops, tablets, and mobile phones.

Unlike many other free blogging platforms, Yola limits users to creating just two blogs for free, each with a maximum of three pages. Nonetheless, the platform’s default CSS builder allows you to customize your Yola site with coding. Yola also provides you with 1GB of storage space and bandwidth, which is certainly an impressive offering.

One of the most impressive features of Yola is its SEO-friendly design. The websites on Yola come with clean HTML-based coding, CSS tags, automatic sitemap publishing, and alerts that send to search engines whenever you update your site.

Additionally, Yola offers e-commerce solutions, but these features are only available with their paid plans. Nevertheless, for creating hobby or personal blogs, Yola’s free plan has plenty to offer. While there may be better blogging sites out there, it’s definitely worth giving Yola a try to assess its performance. The premium plans start at $5/month only.

Is Yola Good as a Free Blogging Site?

Founded in 2007, Yola has been a popular blogging site for more than a decade now. But, if you are considering starting a new blog today, I would not recommend using Yola as your primary blogging platform. Although Yola does offer some nice templates, its free version is quite limited and does not stack up against other free blogging sites.

Additionally, the ability to use your Yola site as an eCommerce space is only available with the paid version, which makes it less attractive for those who are just starting out.

Overall, while Yola’s free version may be useful for experimenting with website building or determining whether you want to pay for a premium plan, I would not consider it the best free blogging site to go with. If you are looking for a free blogging site with more features and customization options, I would recommend starting a WordPress blog.

9. HubPages

Hubpages Home

HubPages is a writing platform similar to Medium, but with its own built-in audience community. You can sign up for free and start creating blog posts. HubPages has become a great community for writers to share their knowledge online.

One of the unique features of HubPages is its default monetization program, which places ads on your content to help you earn passive income.

However, keep in mind that the platform is not only about earning money online. By publishing high-quality articles and building relationships with other HubPages community members, you’ll naturally increase your earnings.

If you write quality articles, you’ll have a greater chance that your articles will rank higher on search engines, and the platform features the best articles on their homepage, which receive more views. This can result in even more traffic and income for you.

Advantages of Hubpages

  • Completely free to publish blog posts.
  • Hubpages doesn’t offer any premium plans.
  • More likely to appear in search engine results.
  • Has an exclusive forum where you can request support.

Disadvantages of Hubpages

  • While you can earn money through advertisements, having too many ads displayed on your blog posts can make them look unprofessional.
  • You don’t have full control over your blog post.
  • HubPages reserves the right to delete any inappropriate content.
  • Your post must meet certain quality and uniqueness standards to be approved.

10. LiveJournal

LiveJournal

LiveJournal is another free blogging site where you can create your own free blog and exchange ideas and knowledge with others.

On this platform, your posts are referred to as journals.

LiveJournal is particularly great for those who love telling stories as it is mainly used for personal blogs where people share their life experiences. It also functions as a blogging-based social networking platform, similar to Medium.

Although LiveJournal does not offer much customization, it is still a straightforward platform where you can easily sign up and start writing your journals. However, if you are looking for more than just a basic-looking blog, they do offer paid plans.

One of the benefits of LiveJournal is that it is free to join and has a built-in community, making it easier for your journals to attract attention. Additionally, the platform has a social media-like feel and is user-friendly, even if you don’t know how to code.

On the downside, LiveJournal’s design templates and customization options are limited and may appear outdated to some users.

Advantages of LiveJournal

  • LiveJournal is a free platform with a built-in community,
  • The community makes it easy to find readers for your blog.
  • It offers a social media-like interface that is simple to use.
  • The platform is great for storytelling and sharing personal experiences.
  • LiveJournal also functions as a microblogging social network.

Disadvantages of LiveJournal

  • The design templates are outdated and limited.

  • LiveJournal has a smaller user base compared to other blogging sites.
  • Some people may find the platform’s interface too simplistic.

Since these options are free, you can experiment with these sites and find the one that suits your specific blogging needs. Additionally, these sites often come with helpful features such as templates, design tools, and analytics to help you grow.
