Or, you can create your own website using a web hosting service – most recommended if you want to make money from your blog. A self-hosted WordPress blog is the most professional way to start a blog.

It gives you more control over your blog, and you can make money, build your personal brand and build an online business more easily.

I personally think it’s worth paying for web hosting and a domain name to have a more professional blog.

After all, you are building a business.

It’s not a hobby, right?

And, if you follow me, I will show you how you can save your money and build a professional blog with less than $50 per year.

So, let’s get’s started with the first step.

1. Choose Your Lifestyle Niche

The first step to starting a lifestyle blog is to choose your niche.

This is the topic that you will be writing about.

It can be anything from fashion, to beauty, to travel, to food, to fitness, to parenting, to lifestyle tips, etc.

You want to choose a niche that you are passionate about, and that you know you can write about for a long time.

For example, I am passionate about blogging.

And I have been writing about it for over 5 years now.

I’ve also built multiple blogs in many different niches. So, it’s obvious what should be a good niche for me.

Well, while passion is important, it’s also essential to determine the profitability of the topic you are choosing for your blog.

If the niche topic you choose doesn’t have any potential to make money online, then it’s not worth pursuing.

Here are a few things to keep in mind while choosing a niche:

  • It should be a topic you are passionate about
  • It should have potential to make money
  • It should be a topic you have some expertise in
  • It should be a unique niche
  • There should be enough demand for the niche
  • It should be a niche you can see yourself blogging for long
  • There are relevant products/services available to promote

I’ve also written an in-depth article on how to choose a niche that makes money. Read it here: How to Choose a Profitable Niche?

I have always believed that the best way to make money from a blog is to solve a problem for people.

And that’s exactly what you are going to do with your lifestyle blog. For example, in this post, I am trying to solve the problem of how people can start a lifestyle blog and make money from it.

The same way, you need to find a problem in your niche and provide a solution through your blog. It could be anything like helping people save money, get in shape, find new fashion trends, etc.

You can choose any topic or niche of your choice.

But, not all niches or topics can be profitable.

You will need to make sure that there are people actually searching for solutions to the problem you are trying to solve.

Keep these things in mind and I’m pretty sure that you will be able to choose a profitable niche for your lifestyle blog.

2. Do Your Keyword Research

The next step is to do your keyword research.

To do that, you need to find out what people are actually searching for on Google or Bing or other search engines online.

The reason?

This will give you an idea of the demand in the market. Once you know the demand, you can be sure that you are choosing a profitable niche.

There are a number of tools that you can use for your keyword research. I personally prefer using Keyword Magic Tool by SEMrush.

Click Here to Sign Up for SEMrush

Once logged in, click on “Keyword Magic Tool” on the left sidebar. Now, you’ll see the following screen:

Type in your seed keyword and click on the “Search” button.

I’ve used the term “blogging” as my seed keyword.

As you can see, there are more than 1.5 million keywords that are related to blogging. You can filter these keywords by difficulty, CPC, search volume, etc. You can also discover related terms and questions.

There are tons of ways to explore keywords using the Keyword Magic Tool. You can read more about it in this SEMrush guide.

Now that you know how to find keywords, I want you to select at least 100 relevant keywords that you want to rank for.

Note: The best keywords are those that have a high search volume and low keyword difficulty. The best keywords are those that don’t have high authority sites ranking for them on the first page of Google.

I know it will be time-consuming to do the research.

But, it will be worth it.

Apart from the Keyword Magic Tool, there are other tools that can help you with your keyword research.

Here are some of them:

So, it should not be hard to do your keyword research.

You can also take help from hundreds of videos on Keyword research on YouTube. There are some excellent resources to help you.

So now, you know what you’ll be writing about (step 1) and you also have a list of keywords that you want to rank for (step 2).

I believe these two steps are super essential even before you set up your blog. Most people create their blog without planning anything and then wonder why they’re not getting any traffic or results.

Even before you create your blog, you should know what you’ll be writing about and what keywords you want to rank for. This is how you can start your blog with a clear purpose and direction.

And, that’s what I want you to do.

Now, you are ready to create your blog (step 3).

3. Set Up Your Blog

Now that you have chosen your niche and done your keyword research, it’s time to set up your blog.

You can do this easily with WordPress.

I recommend using WordPress because it is easy to use, flexible and extremely powerful when it comes to creating a blog.

Also, there are tons of themes and plugins available.

You can do almost anything you can imagine with WordPress.

Plus, it’s free CMS that anyone can use.

Also, over 40% of all websites on the web are built on WordPress. So, it’s not hard to understand why you should use WordPress only.

To create a WordPress blog, here’s what you’ll need:

  • A domain name – $0 to $15 per year
  • A hosting account – $2.75 per month

That’s it!

Just two things you need to get started with your WordPress blog.

The best part?

If you sign up to HostGator using this special 65% OFF discounted link, you’ll get a free domain name for your website. Your cost = $2.75/Month.

Here’s how to set up your WordPress blog on HostGator:

Step 1: Buy Domain & Hosting

At first, head over to this page and select your preferred plan.

HostGator offers three different hosting plans.

For a beginner, I recommend going with the cheapest Hatchling Plan. It’s going to cost you only $2.75/month.

Your total cost:

  • Domain name – $0 from HostGator
  • Hosting cost – $2.75/month
  • Yearly cost – $33 per year only

Quick note: discounted $2.75/month price is applicable only if you opt for 3 year billing cycle. Your total 3-year cost will be $99 only.

As you pick a plan, you’ll be asked to enter your domain name.

If you already have registered a domain name, select I already have a domain name and enter your domain name in the next field.

However, if you’re starting from scratch, I recommend that you buy a new domain name from HostGator. Your domain name will be free for 1 year and will cost you around $12 per year thereafter.

If your desired domain name is available, you can proceed to the next step, enter your billing information and checkout.

Step 2: Install WordPress

It’s easy to install WordPress on HostGator. In less than five minutes, you can have WordPress installed and be on your way to blogging.

Here’s a quick video on how to install WordPress on HostGator:

Or, you can just follow these simple steps:

  • Log into your HostGator account (you will receive an email with your login information after you sign up).
  • Click on the “Hosting” tab at the top of the page and then select “cPanel” to log into your newly created HostGator cPanel.
  • Scroll down to the “Softaculous Apps Installer” section.
  • Click on the WordPress icon.
  • On the next page, select the domain name you want to install WordPress on from the drop-down menu.
  • Leave the “In Directory” field blank unless you want to install WordPress in a subdirectory. For most people, it’s best to leave this field blank. It’ll install WordPress on the root domain.
  • Fill out the rest of the required fields.
  • Click on the “Install” button.

Once WordPress is installed, you can login to your site by going to:

yourdomain.com/wp-admin

Make sure that you replace “yourdomain.com” with your actual domain name. Then, you will be taken to the WordPress login page.

Enter your username and password that you created earlier.

Once logged in, you will be taken to the WordPress admin dashboard. From here, you can start writing posts, creating pages, and adding plugins and themes to your WordPres site.

WordPress Dashboard Image

Basically, you can manage everything from here.

In the next step, I will show you how to configure WordPress and get ready to write your first post and all the next ones.

Step 3: Get Ready to Blog

Now that you have installed WordPress, it’s time to configure it. If you’ve never used WordPress before, don’t worry, it’s easy.

While WordPress is great for blogging right after you install it, it’s a smart practice to configure some basic settings, first.

In this section, I will show you the most important settings that you need to configure in order for your blog to function properly.

First, let’s go to Settings -> General.

Here you can change the site title, tagline, timezone, date format, and start of the week. For the site title and tagline, just enter whatever you decided your blog name should be.

You can also write a tagline for your lifestyle blog.

As for the timezone, date format, and start of the week, I would recommend leaving them as is unless you have a specific reason to change them.

Next, let’s go to Settings -> Permalinks.

Permalinks are the permanent URLs or links to your individual blog posts and pages. It’s important to set the right permalink structure for your blog because it can affect your SEO (search engine optimization).

For the permalinks, I would recommend setting it to “Post name“. This will make the URL structure of your blog posts look like this:

http://example.com/sample-post/

right-permalink-structure

And that’s it!

Next, you should install a WordPress theme.

WordPress themes are basically website templates that you can use to change the look and feel of your blog.

There are thousands of free and paid WordPress themes available.

You can find some good ones here:

Next, you should set up a backup solution for your blog.

This is highly important because it will protect your blog from losing any data if something goes wrong.

I would recommend using BlogVault plugin for this.

Apart from setting up a backup solution with a plugin, you should also take regular backups of your blog.

I would recommend doing this at least once a week.

BlogVault is the best WordPress backup solution. It automatically backs up your WordPress site on a regular basis. If anything wrong happens, you can always restore your site to any previous date.

Well plugins are not only for backups.

In case you don’t know what WordPress plugins are:

WordPress plugins are basically small piece of software tools that add new features or functionality to your WordPress website.

add-new-plugins

There are thousands of free and paid WordPress plugins to choose from. You’ll find plugins to do almost anything you can imagine.

But, you should install only the ones you really need.

Because you don’t want to bloat your site with unnecessary plugins as it can slow down your website.

In fact, you need to take every step to speed up WordPress.

But, still, you’ll need plugins for different jobs. Just try to use only the ones that you really need for your WordPress site.

Installing a WordPress plugin is very simple.

Follow these steps to install and activate a WordPress plugin:

  • Login to your WordPress site
  • Navigate to Plugins -> Add New from the left sidebar
  • Search for the plugin you want to install by typing in the plugin name or keyword in the search box on the right side
  • Once you find the plugin, click on the “Install Now” button
  • Once installed, click on the “Activate” link

That’s it!

The plugin is now activated and ready to be used.

And with that, you’ve successfully created your lifestyle blog. Now it’s time to start writing some great content and promoting your blog.

But, before that, it’s time to name your blog.

So far, we’ve just installed WordPress, configured it, and made it ready to write blog posts. But, before you can start writing our first blog post, you need to give your blog a name.

This is actually one of the most important steps in starting a blog, because your blog’s name will be its identity on the web.

Let’s talk about it in the next step.

4. Choose a Catchy Blog Name

Your blog name should be reflective of your blog’s niche. If you’re blogging about lifestyle, choose a name that says something about that.

It should be unique, so that people can easily find it.

And, it should be easy to remember and pronounce.

Some good examples of lifestyle blog names are:

  • The Blonde Salad
  • The Skinny Confidential
  • Cupcakes and Cashmere
  • A Fashionable Hostess
  • The Fashionable Housewife

Some good examples, right?

These are all catchy, unique, and describe what the blog is about.

It’s also a good idea to register a domain name that matches your blog name. That way, people can easily find your site and remember the URL. After all, that’s what you want from your blog, right?

Also remember to choose a name that’s brandable. You don’t want something that’s too generic or difficult to spell.

Now that you have a name, it’s time to change your blog name inside WordPress. You can do this by the following steps:

  • Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  • Go to Settings > General.
  • In the “Site Title” field, enter your new blog name.
  • In the “Tagline” field, enter a short description of your blog. This will appear beneath your blog name on your website.
  • Click the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the page.

Your blog name has now been changed!

Next, you need to create a logo or header for your blog.

5. Create a Logo for Your Blog

Your website logo will be the first thing people see when they visit your site. So, it’s important to make a good impression.

There are a couple of ways to create a logo for your blog:

  • Use a free online tool like Canva to create a simple logo.
  • Hire a professional logo designer from Fiverr.
  • Create your own logo using Photoshop or another software.

Once you’ve created your logo, upload it to your site.

You may think that having a logo doesn’t make a difference.

While it doesn’t seem to have a big impact on your blog traffic, it does help with branding and making your blog look more professional.

With a professional logo, you can really stand out.

It’s an important step that I see many bloggers skipping.

If you truly want to build a business from your blog, treat it like a business from the start by investing in a logo. It doesn’t cost a whole lot, and it’s worth it. After all, your lifestyle blog is a reflection of you.

At this point, you are ready to write your first blog post.

You will now see the WordPress editor.

Write a New Blog Post

This is where you will write your blog post.

When you are just getting started, things can look a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it seems.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when writing your first blog post:

  • Make sure you write a catchy headline for your blog post – a good headline will make people want to read your blog post.
  • Write in a clear and concise manner – people should be able to understand what you’re trying to say without difficulty.
  • Use easy language – avoid using big words or jargons.
  • Use images, infographics or videos – these help to break up the text and make your blog post more visually appealing.
  • Use helpful formatting features, such as headings and lists, to organize your thoughts and make your blog post easy to read.
  • Proofread your blog post with a grammar checker app. This will help ensure that there are no errors in your blog post.

Now that you know how to write a blog post, it’s time to start writing your own! Remember to keep these tips in mind as you write, and you’ll be sure to create a great blog post that your readers will love.

  • Sharing your blog post on social media
  • Commenting on other blogs in your niche
  • Reaching out to influencers in your niche
  • Guest posting on other lifestyle blogs
  • Create backlinks to your blog post from other sites
  • Ask others to share your blog posts

8. Connect with Other Bloggers

As a lifestyle blogger, it’s important to connect with other bloggers who write about similar topics.

This will help you build a network of blogging friends that you can rely on for support and advice. It can also help you promote your own blog posts and get more eyes on your content.

I recommend attending blogging conferences and events.

You can also connect with other bloggers by joining blogging groups on social media sites like Facebook, Reditt, and Pinterest.

This is an important step in growing your lifestyle blog.

To be honest, networking with other bloggers in your industry is one of the most effective ways to grow your blog.

Some of the benefits of networking with other bloggers include:

  • You can build more links to your blog posts.
  • You can guest post on each other’s blogs to help drive traffic.
  • You can share each other’s content on social media
  • Create expert roundup posts featuring tips from other bloggers

These are just a few of the benefits of networking with other bloggers.

So, if you’re serious about growing your lifestyle blog, then you need to start networking with other bloggers in your industry.

Here are a few tips on how to network with other bloggers:

Join blogging communities and forums

This is a great way to meet other bloggers and create relationships. There are a ton of blogging communities and forums online. So, do some research and find the ones that are relevant to your niche.

Attend blogging events

Another great way to meet other bloggers is to attend blogging events. There are often meetups and conferences specifically for bloggers. So this is a great way to network and learn from other successful bloggers.

Collaborate with other bloggers

One of the best ways to network with other bloggers is to collaborate with them. This could involve guest posting on each other’s blogs, writing joint blog posts, or even just promoting each other’s content.

Use social media

Social media is a great way to connect with other bloggers and build relationships. Twitter is particularly useful for this, as you can easily search for and connect with other bloggers in your niche.

9. Make Money Blogging

One of the main reasons people start a blog is to make money. Obviously, it is possible to make money from a lifestyle blog too.

There are a number of ways to make money from a blog, such as:

  • Display advertising
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Selling products or services
  • Getting paid to write sponsored posts
  • Accepting donations

As you can see, there are many ways to make money blogging.

Even though, there are plenty of ways to generate an income from your lifestyle blog, you should mainly focus on 3 things:

  • Display ads
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Selling products

These 3 methods are the most common and the most effective ways to make money from a lifestyle blog.

Let’s take a more detailed look at each method…

Display Advertising

The most common way to make money blogging is through ads. This is where you allow companies to place ads on your website. Every time a reader clicks on one of the ads, you will earn money.

You may also get paid for ad views.

The amount of money you can make from display advertising on your website depends on a few factors, such as:

  • The traffic you are receiving
  • The number of ads you are displaying
  • The type of ads you are displaying
  • The size of the ads
  • The location of the ads on your website

The point is that there are a lot of factors that influence how much money you can make from display advertising.

You also need to have good amount of traffic on your blog.

Here are a few examples of popular ad networks that you can use to make money from your lifestyle blog:

Remember is that you need to have a good amount of traffic before you can start making decent money from ads.

Another way to make money from your lifestyle blog is through affiliate marketing. In the next section, we’ll look at how you can do that.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is the process of earning commissions by promoting products or services created by others.

For example, let’s say you have a blog about travel.

You could promote travel products and services as an affiliate and earn a commission whenever someone books a trip through your affiliate links that you share within your blog posts.

Quite simple concept, right?

Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money from your blog. You can promote just about any product or service out there. And, you don’t need to have your own product or service to promote.

All you need is a blog and some traffic.

Then, you can start promoting products and services as an affiliate.

You can find affiliate products from affiliate networks like Shareasale, ClickBank, CJ Affiliate, FlexOffers, Awin, Amazon, and more.

Or, you can find affiliate products from companies directly.

For example, Amazon has an affiliate program called Amazon Associates. And, you can promote any product on Amazon.

With low barrier of entry, anyone can start affiliate marketing.

But, it is an art to sell products as an affiliate.

Just creating a blog and signing up for affiliate programs doesn’t guarantee affiliate sales. But, it takes dedication, hard work, and consistency to build a successful blog that makes money.

You need to drive traffic to your blog and then convert those visitors into buyers. And, that’s where most people fail.

If you’re serious about making money with affiliate marketing, then you need to follow a proven strategy.

Wealthy Affiliate is an all-in-one platform to launch a profitable affiliate marketing business from scratch. It combines training, software and website hosting into one and simplifies the process.

I recommend taking a training from Wealthy Affiliate. It is one of the best Affiliate training courses available today.

Sell Products or Services

Another way to make money from your blog is by selling products or services. This could be in the form of physical products, digital products, or services that you’ll sell through your blog.

For example, you could start a food blog and sell cooking tools, recipe books, or cake decorating services. The key to making money by selling products or services is to find a niche that is not too crowded and to offer a unique product or service that is in high demand.

Writing an ebook is a smart strategy.

You can sell the ebook on your lifestyle blog or use email marketing to promote and sell the ebook to your blog subscribers.

10. Keep Going and Don’t Give Up!

Just like any business, it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and time to build a successful lifestyle blog. But it is so worth it!

Never give up on your dreams and always strive to be better.

If you do that, there is no doubt that you will be successful.

The reason why most bloggers fail is because they give up too soon. Don’t be one of them. Keep going and don’t give up!

Having a high traffic blog takes a lot of time, energy, and effort.

But, it is so worth it!

You can make a full-time income from your blog if you stick with it and put in the hard work in the beginning.

After a few years of consistent work, you don’t have to put in as much effort and you can still make a full-time income.

It takes time to build an audience.

So don’t expect to make money right away.

Highest earning bloggers make over $100,000 per month! Do you think they built these million dollar blogs overnight?

No!

They’ve been working on their blogs for years, some of them even 5-10 years. So be patient and keep working on your blog.

It’s hard in the beginning.

But it gets easier and more fun as you go!

When I started my first blog in 2009, it took me a little over 18 months to make my first $1000 from blogging.

For the first 4 months, I did not even make a dollar. I still remember the day when I looked at my ClickBank account and saw that I had finally made my first $100 from blogging after almost 7 months.

It was an amazing feeling!

I was so motivated to keep going that I worked even harder on my blog and finally started making a full-time income from it.

Even this blog took me over a year to make my first $1000 from this blog. I have discussed about it in my Blogging Income Report.

It was not instant money.

It was not easy.

But it was worth it!

Note: Your first $1000 may be hard, but your next $1000 is not. This is true when it comes to make money from blogging.

Never give up on your dreams!
