Why Social Media Is Important For Your Blogging Business?

Are you blogging, running a business, or both?

If you are, then more than likely you are focusing on getting your blog/business out there. It’s no good producing amazing content if no one is reading it! We need to funnel traffic to your site in the best ways possible.

There are lots of things you can do to gain traffic, and using social media is just one of them. Personally, I think it’s definitely one of the most important ways to bring readers to your site and the place where you can make the biggest impact.

These days having a big social following means a lot when it comes to running your own blog. People respect the numbers and are more likely to trust and listen to someone who has a lot of followers.

It’s something to think about if you are a blogger.

I am sure it’s already in the forefront of your mind.

You can use the following to really get your content out there and read by lots of people. If you use social media well, you can use it to get new subscribers, make sales, and grow your blog as a business.

Let’s have a look at the numbers and see why you need to be making headway with social media.

The Statistics

According to Facebook itself, they had 1.32 billion daily active users on average for June 2021 – you can check out the statistics here.

Twitter has an average of 100 million daily active users, according to Omnicore – read the post here.

Instagram has 200 million daily active users according to Statista, which is ever-increasing as of September 2021 – check out the post here.

As you can see, there is a massive amount of people using these social networks on a daily basis. If you are using the right techniques, you can tap into this and start directing some of that traffic to your own site!

You might notice that I haven’t included Pinterest in the above.

Pinterest is a search engine rather than social media, and it is so complex and important that it requires a full post dedicated to it.

Okay, So What Should I Be Doing?

Using social media to attract your ideal audience depends on the type of social media you are using. Each platform has completely different rules and ways to use it to the best of its ability. Let’s break it down and have a look at each of them by itself.

1. Facebook

Using Facebook to gain views isn’t as easy as it used to be.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t seem to reach very many people with my content at all unless I use paid ads.

The paid ads I’ve used have been really successful in driving viewers to my site, but I didn’t see it give a great ROI due to the nature of my business at the time of using them. [It was when I hadn’t had my site for very long and was promoting my content rather than my products/services].

I’m much more focused on my Blogging Consultancy business now and selling my virtual products in my Shop which means I would likely do better by promoting these via Facebook. However, I’ve been concentrating on Twitter and Instagram at the moment because I’ve seen a lot more growth with those.

In the future, I will definitely be using Facebook ads again.

Engagement

Going back to getting organic traffic through Facebook, I really find this the toughest thing to accomplish. It might be due to the sheer amount of people using the platform, but I’ve heard that the algorithms have changed which is making it harder for people to get noticed organically.

I think Facebook is definitely the toughest way to get traffic, and if you can crack it and get a great stream of organic referral traffic from it then I would definitely like to talk to you.

I’ve been looking at ways to improve it, such as using Facebook blogging groups and that seems to be helping.

I think the best thing is to simply comment, chat with people and share others’ content.

As far as I have found this does work best inside other Facebook groups aimed towards bloggers and traffic because the people there are more likely to share and be engaged with what you’ve got to say.

Analytics

I do sometimes use the analytics function for my Facebook page, which comes under the Insights tab. However I’m not focusing all that much on my Facebook engagement at the moment, so I’m not using it to the best of my ability!

At least it comes with its own built-in dashboard so that you can track likes, comments, views, follows, and more.

2. Twitter

Twitter is fast becoming my favorite social media platform.

I find that because so many other bloggers and entrepreneurs use it themselves it is easier to reach people who are likely to enjoy my content.

A lot of blogging relates to finding your ideal audience – that perfect client that you are aiming your content towards.

Once you know what that kind of person would be, then the next step is finding out where that person spends their time.

Personally, for the kind of content I write, mine is on Twitter.

Engagement

I use the knowledge about my ideal client to place my content in places where that person would see it – and dress it up in a way that appeals to them.

Sharing useful and engaging content on Twitter is great because it’s definitely picked up.

People are much more share happy – they are much more likely to retweet your content. I find that engagement is so much higher on Twitter and it’s easier to make connections with new people.

Focus on engagement and connecting with new people – comment on their tweets, retweet things you enjoy, and share your own posts regularly.

You can also use paid ads on Twitter but to be honest, I don’t really see why you would unless you were earning big money from selling your own services.

Some brands are absolutely killing it using ads of course.

However, I don’t think it’s necessary, as you can reach thousands of people on Twitter organically.

Analytics

The analytics dashboard on Twitter is my absolute favorite if I’m honest!

They break it down in a really simple way and you can see exactly what is going on.

It makes it super easy to see what’s been going on.

And look at that reach!

Without paying for a single ad, I think that’s so impressive! Go Twitter.

3. Instagram

Another favorite platform of mine, Instagram is growing quickly.

I love seeing everyone’s feeds – some people’s are absolutely stunning! I also love working on my feed; A lot of the time I use a mixture of elements and tend to alternate between light and bright photos, and dark and striking ones!

Engagement

I find that likes are much easier to come by on Instagram, but you have to work harder for the comments! It’s something I am currently working on – the only way to gain it is by doing it yourself.

Pick accounts and photos that you really do love and leave the person a thoughtful comment. The generic ‘nice photo’ comment won’t get you anywhere!

You need to engage, not copy and paste.

This site is great for sharing photos of behind the scenes and of your work itself.

If you are a beauty blogger you might share pictures of your makeup for the day or the products you’re using. If you’re a food blogger you might share pictures of the dishes you make or the latest restaurants you’ve been to.

Instagram is literally for anyone and you can use it to showcase your work.

If you write a post that you want to draw people’s attention to and you are sharing a related photo, it’s good practice to write in the caption that the link for the post is in the header. You can change the link in your profile by editing your profile and updating it to the new post’s URL. This helps direct more traffic to your site.

Again, you can pay for ads on Instagram, and this might be something that you would consider, especially if you are selling products or services.

Analytics

I thought that Instagram didn’t come with its own analytics but I was wrong!

If you click on the graph on your profile you will be able to see a brief overview of your stats. It shows you the new followers and the number of posts you’ve added in the last 7 days. It also shows you the impressions you’ve had over the last week.

Another handy feature of Instagram analytics is it gives you a view of your audience, which is great for helping you tailor your posts to the right people!

What Works Across ALL Social Media?

  • Engaging with others: writing comments, chatting to people, sending DM’s and sharing other people’s work
  • Sharing great photos that relate to your blog or business – images work no matter where you post them!
  • Getting your links out there – the more incoming links to your site the better, just don’t be spammy. Add them in where it makes sense, not after every comment you make!
  • Following other accounts that you enjoy and that relate to what you do yourself. If their content relates and is interesting or useful, definitely share it with your own followers.
