5 Best Ways to Become a Better Writer And Improve Writing Skills.

Blogging is all about writing, writing, and writing.

To become a great blogger, you need to be a good writer at first.

This is probably the most important factor that makes a blogger exceptional and unique comparing to others. So I feel that it’s very important to know how you can become a better writer if not great.

I mentioned earlier, blogging is mostly about writing. It simply means that if you are not a good writer, you will easily fail in this blogging journey.

I have been blogging for many years now and I can realize the importance of being a good quality writer. I have written more than a thousand articles till now and all are scattered around the internet.

When I first started writing online, the quality of my writings was not very appreciable. But still, I could easily get into the readers’ minds with whatever I used to write.

I don’t want to teach you how to improve your writing skills; I want to share what I learned in my long journey.

I am sure what I am sharing will help you improve your writing skills and you can ultimately become a good writer.

Let me tell you that there is a huge difference between writing a sentence and writing a small article.

Everyone can write. But everyone who writes is not a writer.

Be clear about what you really want to be – a writer or someone who can write.

Assuming that you can answer this question quite confidently, here are a few steps you can follow to become a better writer.

How to Become a Better Writer?

Let’s dive right in.

The first step is to write more than you write.

1. Write More to Write Better

This is the most important step in this journey.

If you want to write better, start writing more and more.

The more you will write, the more you will know how to write. In the beginning, it might seem to be a little difficult. To fight with this difficulty, here are some steps you should follow:

Start With a Story

It’s easier to write a story than to write an essay.

This is the reason why you should start with a story.

There is always a story in your life. Express it through the words you write.

Since it is not very difficult, you will not find any problems doing it. Hopefully, you will soon realize that you are actually writing a lot.

Make It a Part of Your Daily Routine

Whatever you do in your life you should do it with love and care.

When it becomes a part of your daily routine, it actually becomes a part of your life.

By making writing a part of your life, you are actually giving yourself enough opportunity to become a better writer. As I mentioned earlier, the more you will write, the more you will know how to write.

Write Whatever You Can

You can write about whatever you see in front of your eyes.

Take any topic and start writing about it. It’s not that you have to write flawlessly.

In the beginning, you will definitely make a lot of mistakes. But you will slowly learn about these mistakes.

Don’t repeat the same mistake again.

That’s enough.

Answer Questions Online

Nowadays there are many question and answer sites online like Yahoo answers, Ask.com & Quora. Join a few of them. Answer questions that others are asking.

Obviously, you would now write about what you know.

It’s quite easy to start. Remember, fear is the most common culprit that stalls our writing.

Write about Something You Know

Write about anything you know.

Just remember that you have to keep writing more and more.

Slowly you will learn how to write. This is what will make you a good writer after a certain time. Just continue doing it as much as you can until you get some good results.

2. Learn to Express Yourself

Expressing yourself is an art and expressing yourself through your writings is a very special art. Find yourself and express yourself in your own particular way.

Don’t be afraid of what others might think.

Write passionately and believe me that your writings will be a masterpiece. To write well, express yourself like the common people; but think like a wise man.

Always have faith in what you write.

Be passionate about what you want to write. Love your own words and let others love the way you write them.

Be confident and express yourself as you think it should be.

Believe me; there is no other better way to write better. You can write well only when you can feel confident about what you write and express yourself confidently.

Everyone doesn’t know everything.

But everyone knows something. Find your inner potential and express it through your writings.

I can tell you a way to express yourself.

Write about a time when you were angry. Write why you got angry and what made you angry. Make it a story that you are telling someone and write as much as you can.

It may not be only your anger.

You can write about your happiness or any other state of mind.

When you write about your state of mind, you can usually express yourself a lot better.

The way you write about it may not be appreciable in the beginning. But this is how it is and it is the same for all. So there is nothing to be sad about.

Remember everyone has a unique way of writing. This is what makes them different from others. Yours is also unique and it’s not comparable to anyone.

What you feel about yourself is more important than what you think when you write.

Your feelings and emotions will reflect through your writings.

To make it better, you have to feel confident about what you know. It is only when you can write continuously and confidently in your own unique style.

3. Be Unique

A good writer is not the person who can write excellently well.

It is not the person who can write continuously without any mistake. It is also not the person who can write better than everyone else in this world.

But a really good writer is the one who writes from heart and knows what he is writing and why. A good writer defines the reality. A good writer turns facts into truth.

Good writers are those who keep the language efficient. They have a built-in unique talent to express anything in their own unique way.

4. Read a Lot More Than You Read

Read more than you do.

Reading books of great writers makes us efficient and provide us the knowledge we need to create our own unique piece.

The more you read, the more you learn what to write and how.

Remember, a great writer can only make an almost impossible existence alive through writing. You should never miss reading these books ever.

If you really want to be a better writer, make it a habit to read a lot.

Whenever you read something, you get some new information. It increases your knowledge. The more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you are to write in a much better way.

It also improves your analytical thinking skills.

All these things will affect your own writing style.

Because now you know how to craft an article by reading the works of others. Reading doesn’t only make you a better writer, most importantly it increases your memory power.

It is also very important to know what to read.

It’s not a good idea to read only the easy stuff always. You may be entertained.

But you will never grow.

Garrison Keillor says that a book is a gift you can open again and again. Why is it being called a gift? Think again. You will understand.

5. Learn from Great Writers

Here Is a Few Quotes From Great Writers …

“It is not true that we have only one life to live; if we can read, we can live as many more lives and as many kinds of lives as we wish.”

S.I. Hayakawa

“Keep reading. It’s one of the most marvelous adventures that anyone can have.”

Lloyd Alexander

“No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so lasting.”

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu

“No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.”

Confucius

“Who wants to become a writer? And why? Because it’s the answer to everything. … It’s the streaming reason for living. To note, to pin down, to build up, to create, to be astonished at nothing, to cherish the oddities, to let nothing go down the drain, to make something, to make a great flower out of life, even if it’s a cactus.”

Enid Bagnold

“When I sit down to write a book, I do not say to myself, ‘I am going to produce a work of art.’ I write it because there is some lie that I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention, and my initial concern is to get a hearing.”

George Orwell

“The greatest part of a writer’s time is spent in reading, in order to write; a man will turn over half a library to make one book.”

Samuel Johnson

“One thing that helps is to give myself permission to write badly. I tell myself that I’m going to do my five or 10 pages no matter what, and that I can always tear them up the following morning if I want. I’ll have lost nothing—writing and tearing up five pages would leave me no further behind than if I took the day off.”

Lawrence Block, WD

“Just write every day of your life. Read intensely. Then see what happens. Most of my friends who are put on that diet have very pleasant careers.”

Ray Bradbury, WD

“Writing is not necessarily something to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterward.”

Robert A. Heinlein

It’s not that you have to read books only.

The Internet has given us the power to read so many books online. Internet is full of written content. We can always search for a topic of our interest and start reading.

Utilize the power of internet and become a great writer ultimately.

It’s Important to Expand Your Vocabulary.

For a writer who writes a lot, it’s very important to know a lot of words and their usage. So to express yourself more fluently, you need to expand your vocabulary.

The best way to increase it is by reading online magazines, essays, and blogs on a variety of subjects.

Whenever you find an unfamiliar word, don’t try to skip it.

Rather find out its meaning and how to use it.

With more words, you will have more power when you write.

At last, I would suggest you not underestimate yourself at any point in time. Do not compare yourself with others who you think are great.

Rather, compare yourself with the person you were before.

If you are better now, it’s ENOUGH.

However, I don’t find any more brilliant ways to improve your writing skills.

I also feel that you are smart enough to take exactly the right decisions for yourself. It’s guaranteed that you will become a better writer if you follow the guidelines mentioned here.

Good luck…
